Formed in 2009 after the decision to move to a Unitary Authority within Cornwall, St Austell Town Council elects 20 councillors within its five wards of Bay, Bethel, Gover, Mount Charles and Poltair.

The Town Council have four committees; Community, Finance and General Purposes, Planning and Regeneration and Staffing. These committees meet regularly and report back with their updates and recommendations to Full Council, which is a meeting attended by all councillors, typically once every six weeks.

These are usually held in Cornwall Council’s One Stop Shop at Penwinnick Road and during these meetings, there is a dedicated session for public participation, which gives residents’ the chance to raise any issues they may have relating to an item on the agenda.

While traditionally the majority of day-to-day services have been run centrally by Cornwall Council, as part of the ongoing local devolution narrative, St Austell Town Council is currently working on a programme of service transfers from Cornwall Council to themselves, including public toilets, allotments and car parks.

Town Councils also have a long-standing role of representing its local residents and businesses, making sure their view are heard and lobbying on their behalf.

St Austell’s current Mayor is Cllr Graham Walker and the Deputy Mayor is Cllr Gary King. The role of Mayor is both legislative and functional and is required to represent the town through civic and ceremonial duties, as well as chair appropriate meetings as the leader of the council.
